First day of school with all its anxieties, worries AND excitement.
Is it a good fit for my child, will she blossom and flourish here? Would she not be better off at the international school? Can she cope with the size of the class and a 5-day week? Questions that only time shall answer…
My daughter is quite sensitive to sounds, smells and atmosphere amongst other things. Traffic noise is one of the things that ‘hurt’ her ears as do labels on her clothing, her skin. Guess what, it turns out that her teacher-to-be has a 21-year-old daughter with misophonia (‘Misophonia, literally “hatred of sound”, was proposed in 2000 as a condition in which negative emotions, thoughts, and physical reactions are triggered by specific sounds.’ to quote Wikipedia).
This is a windfall for us. The teacher is thus not only sensitised but also has first-hand experience with various stimuli, the signs and their impact.
And then, also on the first day of school, I spotted a beautiful pearl with chain necklace lying huddled up on my path at the school. I knew even before I picked it up that it was a message for me. The pendant had something written on it in German, ‘Gott schütze Dich’ meaning ‘God is protecting you’ with a picture of Maria with baby Jesus and two angels hovering above them on the other side.
My day was made. I was comforted in a way only serendipity can and I let my worries glide off me instantly. I knew I had to surrender & have faith in the magic of day-to-day life. We are in good hands!
(PS: I am a Hindu and I practice Zen. I believe in God and Higher Energy in all forms. And of course, I handed the pendant to the school’s lost and found.)
